What’s happening to the big blue

There’s a lot going on in the ocean nowadays, a lot that society isn’t aware of. My name is Trinity, I am 17 years old and a high school student in my senior year and I’m learning new things about our ocean. You’d think that kids my age don’t care about the big blue, at least most of us don’t. However, more recently the changes in the ocean have affected the entire planet, whether it be the loss of coral reefs and ecosystems, or just an entire species. Its honestly scary how much the chain in the ocean is being affected by our own mistakes. I personally always loved the ocean and I care about it, but I didn’t know the depths of how endangered it was becoming.

There have been numerous projects and experiments that have been created to try to save the ocean ecosystem. One very important project that was created recently was the relocation and replantation of coral. Coral tends to grow quickly and in clusters, forming coral reefs and spreading across the ocean floor. Biologists have been breeding strong varieties of coral to make the reefs stronger and larger in numbers. Simply relocating small piece of the coral could potentially save the reefs and restore the ocean floors.

Over time, the reefs had withered or completely disappeared, leaving fish and other organisms without homes. These simple issues have majorly affected the fish and other marine life, even going as far as to hurt the local fishermen and plenty of ocean related businesses. There are plenty of other issues such as climate change, the rising of sea levels, and the warming of the water. These changes are harming the entire ocean ecosystem, many organisms can’t live in those climates. All these changes have caused a severe decrease in the marine life population,

We’ve already seen a huge decline in ocean life, yet we’ve not even discovered 10% of the ocean, so what about the rest of the organisms that we haven't discovered? It’s truly terrifying to imagine what the oceans could look like one day. Marine Biologists have been working to protect, study, and revive our ocean, even the parts we have yet to see. Everything is being affected negatively, from the fishing industry to the trenches hidden underwater. I think that we should worry more about marine life and how our lives affect the oceans.

Many people love to swim in the salty oceans but they don’t think about all the pollution and harm they’re doing to it. There is almost one hundred and ninety-nine tons of trash that fish eat or get tangled in, the plastic choking the turtles, we are literally killing the ocean. We don’t think about how we are the cause of our planet’s rising demise. I think that if we were taught about these things in more detail then maybe we’d care more, if we knew the damage we were doing, then maybe we would do more to help the oceans.

The most helpful things people could do to help the oceans is study it, clean it, take care of marine life, help restore reefs, do anything. There is so much we could do to help it but most people don’t care. That is why it is so important to take care of the ocean and spread awareness about what is happening to it. Generation after generation will live here, they will thrive or fall, what we do now and how we take care of our environment will decide our future. We need to support the reefs, clean the water, and save the ocean.
